Okinawa is a Japanese island and a popular vacation destination in Asia. It’s actually cheaper to fly to Okinawa from Korea or Taiwan than the mainland Japan due to its location and proximity. I visited Okinawa back in September 2015, but the purpose wasn’t to travel. It was to establish closure to a relationship that was quickly turning toxic. As such, the emotional turmoil is well reflected in all my photos from Okinawa. Now looking back two years later, I wish I had gone out more and I wish I had done more than just sitting by the sea wall for hours every day staring into the ocean. I wish I had gone scuba diving more than once and I wish I had gone out for drinks at bars. I wish I had visited the markets and cute shops that sold souvenirs. I wish I had ridden the big ferris wheel in American Village. I wish I had tried the famous taro ice cream and sushi. I wish I had gone on bus tours and I wish I had taken more pictures. I wish I had visited the famous aquarium up north to see the whale sharks and I wish I had eaten at the recommended restaurants on the internet. I wish I hadn’t restricted myself in trying new things because I was hurting.
Because I didn’t do much in Okinawa, there’s not a whole lot to write about it. Whenever I think of the island, I’m only reminded of how broken I was. But one day I hope to change this. I want to go back to Okinawa and do all the things I mentioned above. I’m no longer broken, so I want to enjoy this beautiful island with my partner. I don’t know when that’d be, but I know it’ll happen one day.
So today, I’m sharing with you the photos I took in Okinawa two years ago. The weather was gloomy and rainy but it was still beautiful. I regret the lack of food pictures, but I promise I’ll fix this problem when I return for the second time 🙂
